Buying a Home Gym

A big advantage of owning a home fitness gym is that you can exercise at home without having to go to a club. They are also private so if you are not comfortable working out with other people around you can do your exercising in the comfort of your own home. Before you go out and buy a home gym consider a few things to make sure you purchase one that is just right for you.

Things to Take into Consideration

  • What space do you have available in your home? Home fitness gyms are bulky and take up a lot of space. They also need a firm base to stand on.
  • How much do you want to pay? Home fitness gyms can vary from about $500 for a small basic gym to more than $5000 for a comprehensive, multi-gym.
  • Is a free weight system or a resistance system using rods, cables or built in weights right for you?

Advantages and Disadvantages of Home Fitness Gyms

With a home gym you can, of course, work out in private in your own home, the gym is always available and you won’t have to wait until someone else finishes before you can do your training. Unlike a club, your home gym is available 24 hours a day and, once you have finished paying for it, you won’t have to pay monthly gym fees. Consider not just the substantial benefits but the down sides too. Home gyms will take up quite a lot of space and may be difficult to set up. You know the machine is always available and it’s easy to put off exercising for another time. Staying motivated may be easier at a gym among other people!

Choosing a Home Fitness Gym

The most important consideration, in our opinion, is how well made the unit is. Don’t be tempted by cheap, poorly constructed gyms that are not going to give you a good workout or last very long.. Over time this isn’t going to save any money. You should be looking for a well constructed sturdy gym preferably made from 11 or 12 gauge steel. A high quality gym will have welded joints, rather than bolts, and heavy duty strong tubing. If possible look for a gym with a long warranty. Some of the better quality, expensive home gyms have lifetime warranties but a minimum to look for is probably 3 years on upholstery and parts.

If you have found a quality home gym at a good price now make sure it is easy to use and adjust for different exercises. You will want to find a gym that makes it easy to change both the type of exercise and the resistance.  If it is too awkward to do this or too time consuming it can easily put you off your workout completely. You need to look for a home fitness gym that has foam padded seats that are easy to use and comfortable. This is not only for your convenience but good padding on seats and leg presses and durable handgrips are essential to prevent blisters and injuries.

Do not rush into buying the first total home gym you see. Find out all you can about how it works and possibly try it out at the store or a local gym. Home gyms can be expensive and you don’t want to make a purchase that you may regret later.
