Green Tea Cure for Acne – Does it Work?

Green tea has been employed as a natural remedy for acne for many years. It is well known for its benefits to health and has been popular in China for many thousands of years to treat all sorts of ailments. It is rich in a compound named epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is an antioxidant. Scientific studies have shown that it will inhibit cancer cells and it has also been shown to be active in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases and in lowering cholesterol levels.

Many studies have shown that the EGCG, as well as being an an antioxidant, can help to reduce inflammation on the skin that occurs with acne. In one study the American Academy of Dermatology used 1% epigallocatechin gallate in a gel which, when used on the skin, was found to improve the acne at least as well as, and often an improvement on, a solution of benzoyl peroxide. In addition the gel did not result in drying out to the skin which is often a common side effect of using benzoyl peroxide or some other treatments for acne.

Lotions and creams can be bought over the counter that contain green tea or you can easily make your own at home. Take some green tea, add to some water and heat until boiling, then gently apply the cooled down solution to affected areas. In addition you could drink green tea which will allow the ingredients to perform their work from inside. Drink at least 2 cups each day and apply a solution containing green tea to your skin up to three times a day. After a few weeks you should see a significant improvement in your acne and you will have a clearer skin.

There are many uses for green tea for both losing weight and health, the treatment of acne is only one of them. As with all natural cures for acne you should combine this treatment with a healthier lifestyle including drinking eight glasses of water each day and making sure you have a healthy diet. Do not despair if your skin does not improve straight away. As is common with all natural cures for acne it will take some time to see results when using the green tea cure for acne.
