Using Retinol Skin Care Products – Some Tips
Retinol products are useful for decreasing wrinkles and fine lines and for promoting the oil level in the skin for people middle aged or older. They are also effective in improving the the skin’s condition for those with cystic acne. In addition they are especially helpful for those with sensitive skin who are not able to use harsher preparations. Many people have experienced dry, flaky, red skin after they have used a glycolic acid or other type of chemical peel and for these a more suitable choice is applying a retinol cream daily.
Studies on Retinol Skin Care Preparations
Many researchers are finding that retinol certainly has a beneficial effect on aging skin. A fairly recent survey at the University of Michigan tried out retinol lotions on a small number of elderly, healthy people, the majority around 80 years old. Over the course of six months they used the lotion on the skin on their upper arms. After the trial skin biopsies showed substantial lessening of wrinkles and fine lines. If this can work for the skin of an eighty year old then it must certainly help much younger skin to recover or retain a youthful appearance! Unfortunately the effect is only temporary as a few of the elderly people found that their skin had started to return to its previous condition after being left for six months with no retinol treatment.
What is Retinol?
Retinol is another name for vitamin A and is a member of a group of chemicals known as retinoids. This group of compounds also includes tretinoin which is used in lotions and creams not available OTC and is a great deal stronger than retinol. These compounds are small, so small in actual fact that they can go through the upper skin layers to contact the collagen and elastin that hold up the skin from beneath. Vitamin A is a very important constituent of collagen and elastin. Over time damage from the environment occurs to these structures which results in less support for the skin and hence wrinkles and lines. Retinoids, when they have reached the lower layer, begin repair of the collagen and elastin, which results in a firmer, more elastic skin with fewer lines.
Acne Treatments Using Retinol
Retinol skin care products are very good exfoliating agents and they also effectively clear pores. This makes them helpful preparations to use if you suffer from acne.
