Contact Lenses – How to Deal With Dry Eyes

If you have dry eyes, contact lenses may be a nightmare. With healthy eyes, there will be a layer of tears underneath the lenses. When this layer of tears starts to dry out, the lenses will begin to feel dry. This can be very irritating, uncomfortable, and you might find yourself rubbing your eyes which will make it worse.

Even though lenses may be one cause of dry eyes, there may be other causes, such as your own ability to produce tears.  Some people naturally produce less tears and as we age, the production of tears can lessen.

Another cause could be your environment.  If your job entails you working in a dirty environment, or are exposed to dust or smoke, your eyes may well start to dry out. Spending  along time in these kinds of situations will make the problem worse.  Exposure for a few hours may be enough to cause you to remove your contact lenses as the dryness causes so much irritation.

There are however, some types of contact lenses that can contribute to dryness as well. A majority of contacts are manufactured of polymers and water, many being more than 50% water. Although the lens feels moist and , once in your eyes the water begins to dry out. When this happens, moisture is drawn from the eyes, causing your eyes to become dry.

With dryness being a common problem for the majority of contact lens wearers, contact lens manufacturers are developing contacts that stay comfortable all day. This is a very common cause of irritation, and the main reason why people decide to give up contacts and revert to spectacles to see better.

A very popular make of lens is Acuvue Oasys. Even though they are fairly new, they have quickly gained in popularity as they are specifically made for those who work or live in dry environments. These lenses contain a rewetting agent, which enables the contact lens to remain moist, even when your eyes aren’t producing enough tears.  They are daily wear contacts, and need to be left in solution overnight and replaced every two weeks or so.

Even though dry eyes are very common, the right type of lens can make a big difference.  You can also use saline or re-wetting drops if your eyes start to feel dry. These can be bought where you buy your lenses.
