Can Exercise Ward off Dementia in Later Life?
A team at the University of Melbourne has been researching the effect of exercise on poor memory. They tested how increasing the level of exercise by volunteers who were over fifty affected their cognitive functions. Overall those who increased their level of exercise found an improvement in miled memory problems over those who did not increase their exercise level.
In total 138 volunteers took part in the test to see if mild memory problems could be improved with more exercise. Mild problems with memory, while not directly leading to dementia problems later in life is an indication that the individual may be at risk. One conclusion from this study is that more exercise may help to decrease the risk of mental functions declining as we get older. Benefits were also noticed up to a year after stopping the increased level of exercise. One theory is that the increased exercise caused an increase of blood supply to the brain which in turn helped to improve the cognitive functioning.
Increased physical activity also has many other benefits of course and the head of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, Dr Susanne Sorensen, said: “Regular exercise is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of dementia and can help slow progression of the condition.
