Nail Fungal Infection: The Facts
Infections caused by certain types of fungal organisms are typical in both the toenails and the fingernail. Nail fungal infection is also called as onychomycosis. It is a condition brought about by the proliferation of a certain group of fungus termed as dermatophytes in the nails. This group of fungi is harmful since they develop and nourish on the keritan, a substance that makes up the surfaces of our nails.
The signs and symptoms of nail fungus are very apparent. The affected nail will develop discolorations – maybe yellow or brown in color. They may develop to become so thick and overgrown that it could be very painful when wearing closed shoes. There may be also the accumulation of foul-smelling debris under the nail.
One may be inflicted with nail fungal infection in moist areas such as in shower stalls, public gyms or swimming pools. The infection in the nails can be spread from one nail to the other or even to other body parts. People who are exerts trauma to their toes by wearing tight socks or tight fitting shoes are at higher risk of getting infected with nail fungus. Another major contributing factor is the lack of good personal hygiene. Wearing of shoes or socks for a long time makes a great environment for the growth of the fungus – a warm and moist habitat. Sharing of personal items such as footwear can also be a significant risk factor.
For one, diet plays an important role in treating fungal nail infections naturally. Individuals who have the infection should include more probiotics or the good bacteria in their meals. This will aid the body to eliminate the fungus. Good sources of probiotic include kefir and yogurt. Lessen the consumption of refined carbohydrates such as sugar, vinegar and dairy products. An excellent internal antifungal substance is olive leaf extract.
